The Artist's Journey
Mukta Sud is a self-taught Madhubani artist inspired by the rich folk traditions of Mithila. An army wife with a deep love for Indian art and culture, she brings that devotion to her work. Her paintings depict nature, mythology and Indian cultural narratives through intricate patterns and symbolic motifs, reflecting an enduring passion for preserving the timeless essence of Madhubani art.
The Tradition
Madhubani painting, also called Mithila art, originated in the Mithila region of Bihar, where it was traditionally painted by women on the walls of homes to mark weddings, festivals and daily life. Its motifs are drawn in double lines and filled with bold natural colour, carrying themes from mythology, nature and the living world.
Once made on mud walls, the art moved onto paper in the 1960s and travelled far beyond Mithila. Yet its intricate patterns and symbolic meaning have stayed unchanged, each piece still built by hand, line by line, in the way the tradition has always demanded.
